New change rooms are being installed in Yarraville to create female-friendly facilities to support the growing participation of women and junior players in soccer thanks to funding from the West Gate Neighbourhood Fund.

Why new change rooms are needed

The facilities will be built at McIvor Reserve adjacent to the Yarraville Glory Football Club, which has experienced a 357% increase in female player numbers over the past 4 years.

What will be provided

Recognising the need for compliant and accessible change rooms, the project will provide two female-friendly change rooms, two amenities' rooms, a store room, and a goal storage area. These upgrades are being supported by a $1 million grant from the West Gate Neighbourhood Fund.

The area where the new change rooms are being constructed is not accessible to the community and is currently being used for goal storage, shipping container storage and informal viewing area. As part of the project, new goal storage adjacent to the field will be constructed.

New scoreboard

To further enhance the spectator experience, a new LED electronic scoreboard will be installed servicing the main playing pitch.

Impact on open space

The new change rooms will have no impact on public open space and create better linkages between change rooms and the soccer pitches.

How the new change rooms will be built

A modular construction approach is being adopted for this project, which will see the change rooms fabricated and built off-site before being placed at McIvor Reserve. This will reduce on-site construction, impacts on the surrounding community and the Club, with completion targeted for mid-2025 during the winter sporting season.

Background

In 2021 the Yarraville Glory Football Club were successful in obtaining a $1.18m partnership through the West Gate  Neighbourhood Fund to deliver modern and compliant female friendly change rooms for the Yarraville Glory Football Club and broader community.

From late 2021 until mid-2023 Council ran community consultation regarding the McIvor Reserve Master Plan to deliver multi-million-dollar improvements, including planning for future soccer infrastructure.

Council, with the support of the Yarraville Glory Football Club committee and WGTP representatives, completed the detailed design development in mid-2024 after a year of investment in the design process. These efforts focused on creating a modern and functional facility that supports the Club's female and junior girl's activities and enhances community participation by providing inclusive facilities for all.

The final design package has been finalised and approved by the Yarraville Glory Football Club committee, allowing the project to progress to the construction phase.

Timing of Works

The construction of the new Female Friendly Change Rooms will commence within the factory early in 2025, onsite early works will commence late April followed by the delivery of the modular structure. Works are expected to be completed by mid-2025.

How the works will impact you?

Works will be isolated to the confined area within the Yarraville Glory Soccer reserve, the area is closed from public access, construction fencing will provide a safe barrier between YGFC members and the works zone.

When works commence onsite, contractors will be on site between 7am-5pm, Monday to Friday. There will be some increase in traffic movements including heavy machinery and delivery trucks accessing the southern McIvor Reserve car park. Council will provide residents with notice when there is expected to be an increase in traffic.

There may be some noise, however Contractors will do their best to minimise impact.

FAQ

Where will the new change rooms be located within the reserve?

The new change room building will be constructed within the fenced soccer precinct ensuring no loss of public open space to the reserve. Please refer to the architectural renders for precise location.

Why are the change rooms being located in this position?

The location has been selected for a number of reasons including accessibility to the car park, proximity to the existing football club pavilion, the benefits of passive surveillance, access to existing services and minimal interference with sightlines for spectators to view the main pitch.

What is Council investing in this project?

In response to the grant being received, the Council allocated $30,000 to cover costs related to site investigations and concept design setting the groundwork for detailed design and impending construction works.
