Council secures funding boost for Footscray’s future
Published on 06 March 2026
Council has secured a $160,000 grant as part of the State Government’s Multicultural Business Precinct Revitalisation Program to support improvements in Footscray’s Nicholson Street precinct.
Part of a $6 million statewide initiative, the program supports multicultural business districts through practical upgrades such as shopfront improvements, streetscape enhancements and public infrastructure.
In Footscray, the funding will assist Council’s broader Footscray revitalisation work, focusing on improvements that support traders while building on the distinctive character of the Nicholson Street precinct. The area is known for its unique shopfront architecture and as a hub for African and multicultural businesses that contribute to Footscray’s reputation as one of Melbourne’s most diverse food and retail destinations.
The funding will support:
- Shopfront improvement grants for local businesses.
- New wayfinding and gateway signage for the precinct.
- Public art reflecting the diversity of the local community.
- Lighting improvements to enhance safety and the evening atmosphere.
These works will complement other revitalisation initiatives underway across the Footscray CBD, including public realm upgrades, increased cleaning and new programs designed to attract visitors and support local businesses.
Mayor Cr Mohamed Semra said the investment builds on the strength and diversity that has long defined Footscray.
“Footscray has always been shaped by the people and businesses who bring their cultures, food and ideas to this city,” Mayor Semra said.
“The Nicholson Street precinct is a great example of that energy. This funding helps support local traders while improving the public spaces that make this part of Footscray so distinctive.”
“As we continue to dream big for the Footscray CBD, we’re focused on strengthening the places that give our city its character. This investment helps ensure the precinct continues to grow in a way that reflects the communities who have built it.”
Council will continue working with traders and community members as the project progresses. Engagement in the coming months will explore how the precinct’s diverse cultures and stories can be reflected in public spaces, signage and art.
