Changes to Council services over the holiday period

The availability and opening hours of some Council services and facilities will change over the Christmas and New Year’s period.

Waste collection

Kerbside bin collections on 25 and 26 December will take place one day later than usual. Collections on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day will occur as usual. 

There will be no bin deliveries or repairs on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day. 

There will be no hard waste collections from Monday 22 December to Friday 26 December. The regular service will resume from Monday 29 December, with the exception of Thursday 1 January when there will be no collection.

Customer Service

We will be closed from midday Christmas Eve Wednesday 24 December, Christmas Day Wednesday 25 December, Boxing Day Thursday 26 December, reopening 8:30am Monday 29 December.  

We will also be closed New Year’s Day, Thursday 1 January. 

Otherwise, regular business hours apply – 8.30am-5pm via phone and in-person at the Civic Precinct and Community Hub. 

If you have an urgent matter on any of the public holidays that cannot wait until the next business day, contact our after-hours service on 9688 0200. The after-hours service can only assist where Council is the responsible provider.

MyMaribyrnong is an online portal where residents can self-manage transactions and interactions with Council at the click of a mouse, including paying for animal registrations, applying for parking permits, checking bin collection schedules or logging service requests. 

Libraries

Over the holiday period, library services will have adjusted hours and some closures, as detailed below. Regular hours will resume on Saturday 3 January 2026. 

• Friday 12 December: All libraries will be closed for a staff development day. 

• Monday 22 – Tuesday 23 December: Maribyrnong Library – closed. 

• Wednesday 24 – Friday 26 December: All libraries – closed. 

• Saturday 27 December – Wednesday 21 December: West Footscray, Yarraville and Maribyrnong Libraries – closed. 

• Braybrook:

• 10am-2pm on Saturday 27 December. 

• 10am-5pm on Monday 29, Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 21 December. 

• Footscray:

• 10am-5pm on Saturday 27 December. 

• 2-5pm on Sunday 28 December. 

• 10am-5pm on Monday 29, Tuesday 30, and Wednesday 31 December. 

• Thursday 1 January: All libraries closed. 

• Friday 2 January: 10am-5pm – all libraries. 

Library return chutes will be open throughout the holiday period. Our eLibrary remains open 24/7.

Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre

Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre will remain open with modified hours over the festive season, except for closures on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. 

The last day for occasional childcare at MAC will be Tuesday 23 December, and will reopen on Monday 5 January 2026. 

Community Centres

• Maribyrnong Community Centre will be closed from Monday 22 December to Friday 9 January, reopening on Monday 12 January. 

• Maidstone Community Centre will be closed from Monday 22 December to Friday 9 January, reopening on Monday 12 January. 

• Braybrook Community Centre will be open throughout the summer holidays but will be closed from Wednesday 24 December to Friday 26 December, and Thursday 1 January.

Phoenix Youth Hub

Phoenix Youth Hub will close at 5pm on Friday 19 December and reopen on Monday 12 January.
