Discussing plans for the City of Maribyrnong's housing futures
Published on 18 June 2025
Understanding the current and future housing needs of residents is a key focus of the second community conversation, with Council now inviting the community to provide their feedback on our Housing Discussion Paper.
City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari, said the population is due to increase significantly in the coming years and getting housing right is important to the future success of the City. Council needs to develop a new Housing Strategy to plan how we can accommodate this growth and guide development and change in our City.
“We expect to accommodate an additional 61,000 new residents by 2051, taking our population to a total of 155,000 people. It is important we have enough housing in the right locations to create neighbourhoods that are liveable and sustainable,” Mayor Tiwari said.
Council also needs to ensure that it can meet the State Government’s housing target for the City of Maribyrnong to facilitate 48,000 new homes by 2051.
Council began a community conversation last year to understand ideas and priorities on how we can accommodate everyone’s housing needs, and what residents enjoyed about where they lived.
Key information gathered showed that respondents thought Council should prioritise green and open space, along with proximity to public transport, when considering new development.
As part of the development of the new Housing Strategy, Council has prepared a Discussion Paper, which lays out the challenges and opportunities, as well as the emerging themes, for future housing in the City of Maribyrnong.
“The Discussion Paper is now being shared for community feedback to ensure we have correctly understood community priorities and preferences, prior to the development of the draft Housing Strategy – which will be shared for community feedback in the second half of 2025,” Mayor Tiwari said.
“We are seeking to hear from all members of our community – renters, homeowners, growing families, empty nesters, people living solo or in a sharehouse, and those seeking to own or rent their first home – to ensure our City remains a place for everyone.”
