In 2020 Maribyrnong City Council in partnership with Victoria University (VU) rolled out new smart technologies in Footscray as part of the ‘Footscray Smart City for Social Cohesion Project’. This year Council will be developing a dedicated Smart City Strategic Framework & Implementation Plan to build upon several successful smart city projects. Council is looking to closely engage with residents and local businesses to tailor the project and outcomes to the needs and priorities of the city and residents are invited to have their say on the project by visiting www.yourcityyourvoice.com.au by 14 May 2021. The new technologies funded by a $400,000 Federal Government grant and boosted by funding from Council and Victoria University (VU) has included the installation of digital kiosks, expanded free public WiFi, energy efficient lighting and air monitoring sensors, a Footscray Park Web App listing flora and fauna and pedestrian, cyclist, and vehicle counting technology to reduce congestion and improve transport. VU developed the ‘Social Cohesion Platform’ which collects the data from the smart sensors enabling data-driven decision making to support ongoing improvements to Council’s service delivery in Footscray. “In today’s climate, innovation and improvement are imperative. We are witnessing more and more the capabilities of new technology to support better outcomes for communities and business around Australia. Maribyrnong City Council is committed to understanding and leveraging this technology to improve our city,” said Mayor Michael Clarke. “COVID-19 and the rush to implement digital systems and utilise modern technologies, has encouraged many organisations across Australia to think outside of the box, and look to the future,” Mayor Clarke continued. “Smart technologies are creating new ways for cities to become more liveable, accessible, connected, safe, sustainable and engaging. This Framework brings Maribyrnong a tremendous step closer to smart city leadership and driving the best possible outcomes for residents,” said Mayor Clarke.
