To mark International Women’s Day on 8 March 2026, Council is proud to present the Matriarchs of Maribyrnong photography exhibition – a celebration of 26 local women nominated by their community for their leadership, care and influence.

Earlier this year, community members were invited to nominate the matriarchs in their lives – women who lead with strength, love and quiet determination. Matriarchs are the women who hold families and communities together, who advocate for others, share knowledge and culture, and create change through everyday actions. They are mentors, carers, organisers and connectors whose impact often extends far beyond what is seen.

The exhibition showcases portraits and stories of 26 women whose influence strengthens Maribyrnong’s social fabric. Together, they reflect the diversity, resilience and leadership that exists across the municipality.

By honouring these women, the project recognises that leadership takes many forms – in homes, workplaces, neighbourhoods and community spaces. It also reinforces the importance of acknowledging women’s contributions not only on International Women’s Day, but throughout the year.

The Matriarchs of Maribyrnong photography exhibition will be available to view online here: www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au/matriarchs
