Inclusive health and fitness programs recognised
Published on 09 May 2023
Council’s Sons of the West and Daughters of the West programs have been nominated in both the Victorian Sports Awards, and the Parks and Leisure Awards for 2023, finalists in the Local Government Initiative of the Year category and the Community Based Initiative of the Year category respectively.
The programs are delivered in conjunction with the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation, and provide opportunities for men and women across Maribyrnong to learn more about their health and engage in exercise. Supported by Victoria University, both programs have also been offered in language for Vietnamese women and men, and East African women promoting social connection in a culturally safe environment.
The nomination and recognition of these programs at a state level is a testament to the value these types of initiatives bring to the inner west.
Offering a free 10-week health program to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of men and women in Maribyrnong, participants take part in one hour of health education followed by one hour of physical activity, suitable for all fitness levels and abilities. The programs cover a broad range of health topics, encourage participants to increase their physical activity levels, enjoy eating healthier foods and make improvements to their mental wellbeing.
The Sons of the West program is currently underway for 2023 and will be back for 2024. The 2023 Daughters of the West program commences in July.

Message from the Mayor, Councillor Sarah Carter
Council continues to develop and deliver inclusive and active programs that promote the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle to our community.
We have been working with our partners on the delivery of the Sons of the West and Daughters of the West programs since 2017 and 2014 respectively, and it is wonderful to see these efforts recognised in this way.
