With the referendum on The Voice to Parliament just weeks away, Maribyrnong City Council is continuing to support residents to make their own informed choice.

A Voice to Parliament information session is on tomorrow, Wednesday 27 September at 6pm at Braybrook Library. This externally facilitated online event will be an opportunity to learn more about the Voice to Parliament as well as key information about the upcoming referendum. This session will be held online and in-person for those who don’t have access to technology. See below for more information on how to register.

This session follows four in-person referendum information sessions at our libraries.

Earlier this month, as part of its ongoing commitment to reconciliation, Council declared its support for The Voice to Parliament voting unanimously to join nine other Victorian councils and 38 across the Nation to officially support the proposed alteration to the Australian Constitution.

City of Maribyrnong Mayor Cr Sarah Carter said regardless of Council’s position, it is up to residents to make their own informed decision.

“We have held several in-person information sessions, and have also put together a list of resource for those who haven’t be able to attend to support a greater understanding around the issue to help with this,” she said.

Cr Carter has also previously signed the Mayors for The Voice to Parliament Public Statement.

“This is an important time for all Australian’s and we need to ensure we get the facts,” she continued.

The Voice envisions a constitutionally entrenched body of First Nations individuals with a direct conduit to the Federal Parliament. This body would possess the authority to influence legislative measures and policies that impact First Nations communities.
