Maribyrnong is marking International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on Wednesday 3 December with a week-long suite of community-centred events that reflect this year’s theme: fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.

Events include:

  • Auslan Bilingual Story Time – a session at Braybrook Library offering early literacy in both Auslan and English, welcoming children and families.
  • Disability pride and authenticity creative workshop – a free workshop at Footscray Library on Friday 5 December (part of the IDPwD week program) for D/deaf and Disabled creatives to explore self-expression and identity.
  • Photography Exhibition ‘Being an Ally’ – a series of photographs on display at Bluestone Church Artspace which highlight Council’s Disability Advisory Committee and their thoughts on being an ally.

These gatherings provide an opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate diversity, and deepen understanding of what it means to create a truly inclusive City.

Council’s celebration of IDPwD is supported by our ongoing year-round commitment to inclusion. Throughout the year, Council hosts and supports a wide range of programs for people with disability – from inclusive events like the Get Active Expo to accessible library collections and inclusive activities at community centres. Families will also find accessible swim lessons at the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, and a new Changing Places facility soon to arrive at Yarraville Gardens.

Together, these initiatives and events reflect Council’s ongoing efforts to create a community where everyone can participate, connect and belong.
