Following a community consultation process, Council has voted in support of naming the newly developed kindergarten at Maribyrnong Community Centre the ‘Sarah Carter Kindergarten’.

The consultation, conducted through Council’s Your City Your Voice engagement platform in May and June 2025, received strong and widespread support from residents.

Council notes that most submissions welcomed the decision to commemorate the late Councillor and three‑term Mayor, Sarah Carter – an advocate for early childhood education, gender equity, cultural development, and community wellbeing.

“Sarah was an exceptional public servant who served on Council for 16 years, and the community has been supportive of honouring her memory,” said Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari, during the initial proposal.

Cr Carter, who passed away in August 2024 at the age of 45, left a lasting legacy across the municipality. She was the first female Mayor in Maribyrnong’s history to serve a third term and earned the prestigious Mayor Emeritus status for her outstanding contributions.

Her work included championing the redevelopment of the kindergarten at Maribyrnong Community Centre, a project she passionately supported during her time on Council.

Council would like to thank community members who participated in the naming process. Their voices ensured that the chosen name reflects both the values and history of our community.

“Naming the kindergarten after Sarah Carter ensures her dedication to children, families and equity will continue to be celebrated by generations to come,” Mayor Tiwari said.
