Proposed expansion of NEXTDC

Published on 31 March 2026

Statement issued on behalf of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Mohamed Semra:

Maribyrnong City Council has lodged an objection to the Ministerial planning application for the proposed expansion of NEXTDC.

We recognise the role data infrastructure plays in supporting Victoria’s economy. But this proposal, in Council’s view, does not adequately reflect the protection of the surrounding environment, specifically Stony Creek.

We are concerned about the scale of the buildings along Stony Creek, the level of overshadowing, and the impact that will have on the creek corridor and the people who use it.

Stony Creek is an important natural and community asset. Development next to it needs to be designed to protect this essential green corridor and community asset.

We are also very aware of community concerns. Local residents are concerned about construction impacts and what this level of development means for their neighbourhood. Not every issue raised is something the planning system can resolve, but it is important that it is heard and considered.

Our objection sets out where we believe the proposal does not meet planning requirements. There are some elements we support in principle, including proposed public realm improvements, and we have sought to strengthen  as recommended conditions if a planning permit is issued by the Minister.

Given the scale of the project and its location, a robust Construction Management Plan will be critical to minimise disruption during works.

We will share our submission at the April Council meeting so the community can see our position in full.

This is not about opposing development. It is about making sure it is appropriate for its location. We will continue to advocate for an outcome that better protects Stony Creek and responds to the expectations of our community.
