New sites to drop-off unwanted textiles and electrical materials

From 1 December, residents of Maribyrnong City Council will have access to 18 clothing and electrical drop-off hubs to dispose of unwanted textile and electrical items at 6 sites across the municipality.
The installation of the drop-off sites comes after a successful 3 month trial of 2 clothing hubs and 1 electrical hub in Southampton Street, Footscray. The drop-off hubs provide the option of reusing and recycling items that would otherwise be sent to landfill.
Textiles make up approximately 5% of the contents of Council landfill bins. Unlike many clothing bins in circulation, all textiles can be placed in these newly installed drop-off hubs regardless of their condition. Textile materials collected are sent for reuse, recycling or converted into alternate fuels.
The electrical hubs will be utilised for deposing of e-waste items such as old mobile phones, laptops and video cameras. E-waste items are growing up to 3 times faster than general municipal waste in Australia and is set to increase by more than 60% in the next 10 years.
With the State Government set to introduce a ban of e-waste entering landfill from the middle of next year, residents will be able to utilise the electrical hubs at the various drop-off sites.

- Clare Court Children’s Services – Yarraville
- Recwest - Essex Street, Footscray
- Maribyrnong Community Centre – Randall Street, Maribyrnong
- Carpark - Southampton Street, Footscray (near Western Hospital)
Maribyrnong City Council have partnered with SCR Group, a purpose-driven business that specialises in clothing reuse and recycling, to deliver the drop-off hubs.
