The demolition of RecWest and the redevelopment of the Shorten Reserve playing surface will commence in September, signalling the start of the implementation of the endorsed Master Plan. The site is set to undergo a major transformation, thanks to a joint investment of over $42 million from Council and the State Government.

“The redevelopment of Shorten and Barrett Reserves will deliver new facilities and public spaces aimed at enhancing community access, recreation, and liveability,” said Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari.

Following a competitive tender process, Ireland Brown Constructions has been awarded the contract to demolish RecWest and compact the Shorten Reserve oval, in line with the Master Plan.

RecWest will officially close to the public on Monday 1 September 2025, and Council is working closely with YMCA to ensure members smoothly transition to other venues where feasible until the works are complete.

Council is also working with sporting clubs and hirers to find suitable locations for training and game play during the works.

Shorten Reserve, Barrett Reserve and Market Street will close to the public on Monday 15 September 2025, with the demolition of RecWest and upgrades to the Shorten Reserve playing surface to begin shortly after.

Once complete, the new RecWest stadium will feature an upgraded and larger health club, café, two indoor courts, community rooms, changing places facility, public toilets, and additional storage.

The partial closure of Market Street, which was endorsed by Council in June 2025, will accommodate a vibrant public space designed to host community events, markets and support active transport between the reserves.

To honour the role RecWest has played in the community, Council will host a closing event on Saturday 13 September 2025. Further details will be available on Council’s website and social media channels closer to the date.
