Naming of unnamed road in Maribyrnong

On display until 01 May 2026, 11:59 PM

In accordance with the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria – 2022 (the Naming Rules), Maribyrnong City Council is proposing to formally name an unnamed road in Maribyrnong. We are inviting community feedback on the suggested name: Substation Close.

A development currently underway at 191 Rosamond Road, Maribyrnong, has created the need to officially name the adjoining road to support accurate addressing and essential service delivery.

Proposed Name

Substation Close is proposed, recognising the historic Maribyrnong Tram Substation located at the end of the unnamed road.

The substation was constructed during World War II to power tram extensions servicing the munitions industry and is a rare surviving example of wartime infrastructure and camouflage architecture. Its distinctive design, including the integration into a former quarry wall, reflects the ingenuity of the era and contributes significantly to the area’s industrial heritage.

Location

The unnamed road is shown outlined in blue and the Maribyrnong Tram Substation is shown outlined in red in the aerial below. The unnamed road runs off Raleigh Road, Maribyrnong.
