Melbourne Water and EPA Victoria continue to conduct assessments to understand the scope and extent of further remediation works along the five kilometre reach of Stony Creek between the fire site and the Stony Creek Backwash. Contaminated land and waterway specialists have also been commissioned to assist with this task.

All contaminated sediment that has been removed from the Creek has been processed, treated and transported to a secure landfill site. EPA and Melbourne Water are currently reviewing sediment data and finalising the approach for the next stage of remediation.

EPA expects to receive the sampling results from 23 August next week. Results have been stable for several months and therefore no significant changes are expected to be observed.

Regular inspections continue to be carried out to monitor conditions in the Creek, particularly during periods of rainfall.

The Stony Creek Rehabilitation Plan will be officially launched at a community event this Sunday 8 September from 11am–2pm in Cruickshank Park. Come along for a barbecue, planting activities, educational and interactive activities for kids of all ages.

Find out what's planned for the next 12 months and how you can get involved. Staff from Council, Melbourne Water and EPA Victoria will be on hand to answer questions about the recovery and rehabilitation of Stony Creek. Details for the community event can be found on Melbourne Water’s Facebook page.

EPA’s ongoing advice is:

  • Avoid contact with the water in Stony Creek

  • Don’t walk along the edge of Stony Creek

  • Don't let pets swim in the area or drink the water

  • As a precaution avoid eating fish from Stony Creek

  • Seek medical help if you feel unwell
