We are planning to install our second Woody Meadow on a small piece of public land on Albert Street in Seddon.
This project is supported by $20,000 as part of the Victorian Government's Pick My Park program.
A Woody Meadow is a dense pocket of drought-hardy native plants which are pruned heavily on a regular schedule to simulate natural disturbances like fire, storms or floods. This causes the plants to grow quickly and creates a diverse pocket of native plants.
Our first Woody Meadow was planted in Yarraville's Cuming Reserve in May 2024 in collaboration between Council, Footscray High School students, the Green Guerrilla Group, and the University of Melbourne.
The Woody Meadow Project, led by the University of Melbourne Green Infrastructure Research Group, aims to create low-maintenance and high aesthetic landscapes using Australian Native plants.
Linking to the Urban Forest Strategy, this initiative contributes to key objectives, including adapting to climate change and maximising environmental outcomes.
