Did you know that in Australia more than 200,000 tonnes of textiles are sent to landfill each year? That’s the equivalent weight of almost four West Gate Bridges, just from clothing and other materials!
Green Collect and Maribyrnong are partnering to help our community sort their clothing sustainably from September 2026. Footscray Library will host a drop off hub for wearable and unwearable clothing.
Clean clothing, accessories and shoes.
All donated clothing is sold through local social enterprise and charity Green Collect. Green Collect supports employment pathways for people who usually face barriers entering the workforce.
Clean end of life clothing, manchester and towels.
The end of life clothing will go through various recycling streams depending on what it is made of. Textiles are sorted and broken down locally (Melbourne). This "shredded" material can be turned in a range of products; furniture, roads and architectural materials here in Australia. In order for fibres to be turned into other fibres, this process can only occur offshore as Australia does not have these facilities yet. Most importantly, the rest is used in more research to discover more ways to process textiles. RMIT, Deakin and the University of Sydney are all partners in this research.
Domestic volumes will only be accepted, no commercial waste. The cage is emptied weekly, please consider your fellow community members and limit your drop off's per week.
Please note: Due to community health and safety, items must be in unsoiled condition. This means no paint, glue or chemicals and no stains from bodily fluids. Shoes and underwear cannot be recycled.
