Council has appointed Architectus as the lead design consultancy for Creative West, a project that will transform the current Footscray Library site and adjoining carpark into a vibrant cultural hub with a large performing arts venue, an expanded library and welcoming open space.

City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Mohamed Semra said Creative West is an important project for Footscray and our wider community.

“This is an exciting step forward for Council on our journey to revitalise Footscray. Creative West is a key priority for our City, which will not only strengthen Footscray’s reputation as a creative neighbourhood, but also support our current and future creative and cultural endeavours.”

“We look forward to working with Architectus to bring this dream to life – while bringing our community along on the journey.”

As part of the tender process, Council also sought indicative pricing for the future delivery phase – which is currently unfunded. This information will help Council understand the full project lifecycle costs and support future contract negotiations when funding for construction is secured.

In January 2025, the Australian Government announced $5 million to support the planning and design of Creative West project under the Urban Precincts and Partnerships Program; which has also been matched by Council.
