City of Maribyrnong Welcomes New Mayor and Deputy Mayor for 2025-26

The City of Maribyrnong is pleased to announce the election of Cr Mohamed Semra as Mayor and Cr Samantha Meredith as Deputy Mayor for the 2025-26 term.

Cr Semra was first elected to Council in 2024 and steps into the mayoralty for the first time. Cr Meredith also first elected in 2024 will commence her first term as Deputy Mayor.

“It’s an incredibly exciting time for our city as we continue to grow and evolve,” said Mayor Semra.

 “It is a privilege to serve such a supportive, inclusive and community-minded City, one that consistently shows its resilience, creativity and commitment to looking after one another.

“I will lead with accountability, listening, advocating and building trust – creating a space to work together.

“Our City is vibrant, diverse and rapidly transforming. This term, we will continue to lead strong advocacy on the issues that matter to make sure our city is thriving, welcoming and safe.

"This includes leading advocacy for the revitalisation of Footscray, improved mental health and wellbeing supports, better air quality and environmental outcomes, integrated transport, flood recovery, and the community infrastructure investment required beyond Council’s resources alone.

“This term we will also progress our advocacy and design work for Creative West, a once-in-a-generation project that will strengthen our City’s creative, cultural and economic future.

“At the same time, we remain focused on meaningful engagement and delivering critical infrastructure and ensuring every Council service helps people live well, participate fully and thrive.

"I am also committed to working tirelessly to improve community safety in Maribyrnong,” Mayor Semra said.

Deputy Mayor Cr Meredith added: “Maribyrnong is a City that celebrates diversity and supports opportunity. I look forward to working with the Mayor and my fellow Councillors with care, passion and action and keeping the community at the heart of everything we do.”

The newly elected leadership team also thanked outgoing Mayor and Deputy Mayor for their service and contribution to the community, acknowledging their commitment and the role they played in shaping the City’s progress.
