Council’s Active Maribyrnong program has been successful in securing an Australian Sports Commission’s Play Well Participation Grant to deliver the Go Family program, leading the way as the first to deliver this program state, and nation-wide.
In collaboration with Football Victoria and local football (soccer) clubs, the Go Family program underscores Council’s dedication to promoting health and fitness, and strengthening familial bonds within the community.
The six-week program, that will allow children and parents to play football together at the same time, will focus on fun, fitness, and build strong family connections, aims to increase involvement in sport and physical activity.
City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam said introducing Go Family to our community will provide families with a unique opportunity to bond over a shared love of football, recreation, and fun.
"Council is committed to reaching as many individuals as possible and creating a sense of belonging within our community. With football growing in popularity Go Family is an opportunity to engage the whole family watching and playing together. This program hopes to inspire families to come together, stay active, and build lasting memories,” Mayor Lam said.
Sessions will consist of skills training, fun mini games as well as practice matches. There will also be a come and try session coming up in July where families can get a feel for the program before signing up.
Sue Collins, Head of Equity at Football Victoria added: “We are excited by the opportunity this provides Football Victoria in partnership with Maribyrnong City Council and local football clubs to enable participation options in a new, fun and innovative initiative.”
Three local football clubs; Maribyrnong Swifts, Yarraville Glory Football Club, and Footscray United Rangers are supporting the program which will be rolled out from July 2024, starting with a come and try session.
Registrations for the six week sessions, which will run throughout the year, can be made on the Football Victoria website https://www.footballvictoria.com.au/home
