East Meets West

Experience the best of Vietnamese culture in the heart of Footscray with the East Meets West Lunar New Year Festival on Sunday 21 January.

Celebrating the year of the Dog in 2018, this long-established Lunar New Year festival attracts thousands annually with a day-long feast for the senses with a festival parade, cultural dances, musical performances, food stalls and carnival rides.

The festival began more than two decades ago and has grown to become a truly multicultural event showcasing the cultural diversity and cohesiveness of Footscray.

“With its strong multicultural community, the inner west of Melbourne, and in particular Footscray, is truly a place where East really meets West,” said event Co-ordinator Hai Pham.

“Whilst its origin is Vietnamese, the event has evolved over the years to include participation from other Asian communities such as Chinese, Thai, Cambodian and Philippines and more recently, the South African community has also become involved,” said Pham.

A flag-flying performance will open the festival and there will be lion-dancing, firecrackers, and live music throughout the day, including a traditional Vietnamese bamboo music band performing on the main stage.

Food stalls will take over the streets and there will be games and rides for all ages followed by a fireworks display to end the festivities.

"We're delighted to have the support of many traders, including Footscray Market which will provide free parking for the day and fireworks for the finale,” said Mr Pham.

“Come down and join in the fun and celebrate the Year of the Dog with us!”
