Community tree planting

Join us to plant 4,000 native ground covers and shrubs to increase habitat for wildlife on 27 July as we mark National Tree Day.

Each year we celebrate National Tree Day with our community to enhance the local environment, and this year we are planting along the Maribyrnong River in Pipemakers Park.

Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari said National Tree Day is a great opportunity to get your hands dirty and meet people in our City while making a positive difference to your neighbourhood.

“We are committed to increasing the tree canopy within the City of Maribyrnong, and this planting day is the perfect opportunity for our community to come together to support and enhance our local biodiversity,” Mayor Tiwari said.

Alongside increasing our canopy cover, revegetation along our waterways is a key part of Council’s Urban Forest Strategy. These tree planting events play a significant part, helping prevent future bank erosion and growing shrubs that shade the water to maintain better temperatures for local wildlife.

“Maribyrnong’s trees and vegetation – our urban forest – play such an important role in the overall health and liveability of our City. Events like this truly transform our suburbs, and we thank Melbourne Water for supplying the native plants for this year’s event,” added Mayor Tiwari.

Everyone in our community is invited to help us get 4,000 plants in the ground, and attendees can enjoy a free coffee and BBQ lunch for their efforts. As part of the event there will also be free face painting and a wildlife show where residents can learn about the animals that call our parks home.
