Improving local roads in Maribyrnong

Council manages over 290km of Council-owned roads throughout the municipality, and continues to make improvements and upgrades to them to ensure they are safe and functional for all road users – drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

In recent months, we have made a range of improvements local roads near you:

We laid a new asphalt at Gibb Street, Maidstone which comprises of recycled Australian-made tyres – helping reduce the amount of tyres going into landfill. The surface boasts a range of additional benefits, including additional elasticity properties which help increase flexibility and durability of the surface, and reduce cracking to help ensure longevity.

Jerrold Street, Footscray received close to a $1 million reconstruction with new asphalt on the surface, improving its quality and enhancing the safety and usability of the road for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. Further improvements include a complete reconstruction of the footpath on either side of the street, along with new kerbs, media islands along the centre of the road and upgrades to the drainage infrastructure.

We have continued to maintain numerous local roads throughout the municipality as part of our annual Local Roads Re-Sheet Program, which manages the ongoing maintenance of local roads with new asphalting and repairs. Roads that have recently been re-sheeted include Jepson Street, Yarraville; The Esplanade, Maribyrnong; and Menzies Street, Braybrook.

Flat top speed humps have been constructed at Chatham Street and Creswick Street, Footscray; and Simpson Street, Yarraville, as part of the speed monitoring program that investigates each neighbourhood to address road safety concerns. This new infrastructure has been installed to address vehicular speeding along the street to make it safer for all road users.

To help improve pedestrian, driver and cyclist safety on and around local roads, Council, in partnership with VicRoads, has recently lowered the speed to 40km/hr on some Council owned roads in Braybrook, Maidstone and West Footscray as part of the Safer Local Roads project. The annual project was endorsed in 2017 and aims to ensure the safety of all road users while providing a safe space that encourages residents to use more sustainable modes of transport such as walking or cycling.

New raised intersections have been installed as part of the recommendations from West Footscray and Kingsville Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) Study. The raised intersections encourage drivers to slow down and take extra care at 4-way intersections. Locations include the intersection of Chatfield and Wales Street, Kingsville; and Stanhope and Palmerston, West Footscray.

A new raised threshold treatment at the intersection of Bishop Street and Somerville Road, adjacent to Kingsville Primary School, has been installed with funding support from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) through their Active Paths program. This treatment highlights the path of pedestrian movement and encourages drivers to slow at the intersection to help pedestrians cross the road safely.

Safe walking and cycling routes to school have been enhanced with new maps, signage and path decals installed at Kingsville Primary School to support children travelling safely to and from school. The project was jointly funded by Council and Bicycle Network’s Ride2School Active Paths program.

These projects are supported by Council’s Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2021-2030, a document that outlines Council’s approach and commitment to managing road safety for the community.
