Council has reinforced its commitment to supporting businesses in the Footscray CBD, endorsing a range of practical measures to further enhance business confidence and activation in the precinct.

The measures build on the broader Footscray revitalisation project and follow encouraging outcomes from Council’s recently completed security trial, which delivered increased visible presence, stronger engagement with traders and community members, and positive feedback regarding perceptions of safety in the CBD.

Council resolved to consider alternative business attraction and activation measures for the Footscray CBD, including using the area as a pilot for Business Friendly Council process improvements, implementing a matched Business Façade Improvement Program, and extending the Creative Places program.

One of the key proposals is a Matched Business Façade Improvement Program, targeted specifically to the Footscray CBD. The program would focus on practical, highly visible improvements to shopfronts and business premises, helping lift the presentation and vibrancy of the CBD.

This co-investment model ensures businesses invest alongside Council, creating shared commitment and stronger outcomes for the precinct.

The façade program would complement Council’s broader Footscray revitalisation efforts, including activation initiatives such as Creative Places 2.0, which aims to inject new energy and creativity into the Footscray CBD while stimulating increased visitation and local trade.

Together, these initiatives reinforce Council’s ongoing commitment to strengthening local business confidence, stimulating economic activity, and supporting a thriving, welcoming and dynamic Footscray CBD.

Mayor, Cr Mohamed Semra said the endorsement reflects Council’s practical and balanced approach to supporting local businesses.

“Footscray CBD plays a critical role in our City’s economic future. We are committed to backing our traders with practical improvements while ensuring we are supporting the community that calls Footscray home,” the Mayor said.

Speaking about the proposed Matched Business Façade Improvement Program for Footscray, Mayor Semra added: “Visible improvements matter. When shopfronts are refreshed and buildings are better presented, it sends a strong signal of confidence and momentum. A matched funding model ensures shared investment. Council and businesses working together creates stronger outcomes and greater pride in our CBD.

Our message to traders is simple. We value your contribution to our local economy and community life, and we want to work alongside you to support growth in Footscray.”
