Transforming Footscray Wharf into a vibrant community space
Published on 23 May 2025
Following upgrades to the Footscray Wharf in 2022 – including a new 230-metre-long timber boardwalk as its centrepiece, with a fixed lower landing and floating pontoon to provide access to the water – Council is implementing further upgrades to facilities and amenities to revitalise the Maribyrnong River waterfront.
Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari noted “these projects aim to advance the revitalisation of the Footscray Wharf and surrounding area, enhancing accessibility for local residents to engage with a range of spaces offering both active and passive recreational activities, progressing Council’s commitment to delivering liveable neighbourhoods for all.”
Council has been working with the West Gate Tunnel Project, who jointly funded the Footscray Wharf upgrades completed in July 2022, to identify opportunities to further improve the space following feedback from the community requesting additional amenities in the area.
This includes complementary development works including a new public toilet and a shared user path at Grimes Reserve, along with additional open green space.
A contemplative seat will also be installed and named in honour of the late Cr Sarah Carter, as a permanent tribute to her contributions to the City of Maribyrnong.
Council has recently completed a new green space in the vacant lot on Saltriver Place near the river’s edge. Engagement with local residents in 2022 reflected a demand to transform the space previously used as informal car parking, into an open space complete with a footpath connection, lawn area, garden bed planting, tree planting and picnic table. These works are now complete and the space is open for community use.
Council will also soon commence works to construct public toilets on the Council site at 60 Maribyrnong Street, providing much needed amenity within the precinct. Site clearing works commenced in May, with the construction of the toilet expected to be complete early September 2025.
Other nearby improvements include new lighting on the Bouldering Wall underneath the Hopkins Street Bridge to illuminate this space, increasing safety and accessibility. These works are expected to be complete by late May.
