How Council is addressing the Climate Emergency

Our-Environment-Climate-Emergency.jpg

On the 19th of February 2019, Maribyrnong City Council declared a climate emergency requiring urgent action across all levels of government.

This recognises the need for rapid, community-wide and Council-led efforts to restore a safe climate. With the last five years being the hottest on record, Australia is already experiencing more frequent and intense heatwaves, floods, bushfires, storms, species loss and extinctions.

These impacts affect everyone, especially the most vulnerable members of our community. Council has a vital role in reducing emissions, supporting community resilience and advocating for stronger action.

A safe climate is still achievable, but only through immediate, emergency-level efforts to reach zero emissions across all sectors. And while we can’t change the whole world, we can change what we do here and lead by example.

Climate Emergency Strategy and Action Plan

The Climate Emergency Strategy 2020-2025 was created by our community in 2020 and provides the strategic direction and high-level goals for Council in our climate emergency response.

The Climate Emergency Action Plan outlines the actions Council will take over the next four years to achieve the Climate Emergency Strategy goals. It includes actions Council can take to reduce our own emissions, and to work with the community to transition to zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The Climate Emergency Strategy and Action Plan 2020-2025 are currently being reviewed by Council.

What can I do to help?

While the council is taking action, every individual and business can play a meaningful role in creating a healthier, more climate-resilient future. Here are just a few simple ways to make a positive impact.

What you can do to help as a community member

Reduce your environmental footprint

  • Choose active or public transport: Ride your bike, walk or take public transport when you can
  • Dispose of food waste responsibly: Food waste in landfill produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Help to reduce emissions by composting at home or using your green waste bin.
  • Make the switch to clean energy: Explore solar panel and battery options. Government subsidies can make installation more affordable, and you’ll save more on your electricity bills in the long run.
  • Improve your green space: Plant native plant species to support pollinators, boost biodiversity and contribute to urban cooling

Advocate and keep learning

  • Stay informed: Learn about the climate emergency and share what you discover with your close friends and family
  • Get involved: Join local climate action groups such as Climate Action Maribyrnong, AYCC, SEED, Victorian Forest Alliance or Act on Climate Victoria.
  • Volunteer locally: Look for opportunities with “Friends of” or community groups to connect with nature and support local environmental projects

What you can do as a business owner

Businesses play a powerful role in shaping a sustainable community. Here’s how yours can contribute:

  • Cut energy use: Improve efficiency to reduce environmental impact and lower your operational costs
  • Encourage bike usage: Encourage staff and customers to ride to reduce their environmental footprint. Council research has shown that cyclists and pedestrians shop more often and spend more than those arriving by car or public transport.
  • Support a reuse culture: Offer or accept reusable containers, cups and bags to help cut down on single-use packaging and waste
  • Make more sustainable business choices: Reduce your water usage, learn how to reduce and manage your waste, invest in more sustainable retro fittings or invest time into learning how to design and provide more sustainable products.
