The City of Maribyrnong is home to a wide variety of native animals.
Injured wildlife
If you find injured, sick or orphaned wildlife, contact Wildlife Victoria on 1300 094 535 as soon as possible.
Do not attempt to handle the animal unless directed to do so by Wildlife Victoria.
Native animals, possums and swooping birds
Council does not have legislative authority to manage issues relating to native animals.

Snakes
Snakes are more active during the warmer months and may be seen in gardens, parks, waterways and other open spaces.
If you see a snake:
- keep calm and move yourself, others and your pets away from the area
- do not approach, touch or attempt to capture the snake
- if someone is bitten, call 000 immediately
- if a pet is bitten, seek veterinary treatment immediately
If you see a snake on your property, contact a licensed snake catcher.
If you see a snake in a high-risk public place, such as a playground, contact Council on (03) 9688 0200.
Red Foxes
Red foxes are an introduced pest species that can threaten native animals and create a nuisance by damaging property, scavenging for food and disturbing pets.
You can help discourage foxes by:
- securing rubbish bins
- bringing pet food indoors
- removing potential shelter, such as piles of timber or building materials
- keeping compost and poultry enclosures secure
