Towards Gender Equity 2030

Toward Gender Equity 2030 Cover

In 2019 Council launched its Gender Equity Strategy (the Strategy) titled, Towards Gender Equity 2030.

Our vision

The Strategy's vision is:

All people in Maribyrnong flourish and live free from violence and discrimination and have equal status, rights, opportunities, representation and respect, regardless of their gender.

Our role

The Strategy sets Council's role in achieving gender equity by the year 2030 in the areas of service provision and community strengthening, providing local leadership, developing policy and planning with gender equity considerations, developing facilities and creating safe public environments and by building a gender equitable workplace.

As the level of government closest to the community, Victoria’s Councils have been mandated to create healthy, safe and inclusive communities since the early 2000s. This has been further reinforced by the 2015 Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence, with a key outcome that Councils are now required to ‘report on the measures they propose to take to reduce family violence and respond to the needs of victims.’

Our objectives

The Strategy's six objectives are to:

  1. Strengthen our response to family violence and violence against women.
  2. Work alongside the community to prevent violence and normalise gender equality in public and private life.
  3. Increase women’s independence and role in decision making.
  4. Ensure that the development of policy, programs and services considers the specific impacts of gender inequity on health, wellbeing and safety.
  5. Ensure that the development of policy, programs and services considers the specific impacts of gender inequity on health, wellbeing and safety.
  6. Take steps to be a more safe and gender-equitable organisation.

Action Plan and Community Report Card

Our strategy and objectives are supported by an Action Plan that is reported against annually.
