Sports Ground Status
Maribyrnong sports grounds are well used community assets and great care is taken to maintain surfaces to the highest possible standard.
Sports grounds will be closed periodically or have restrictions in place due to:
- Programmed maintenance such as spring and autumn renovations
- Reactive maintenance such as wear and tear and drainage issues
- Inclement weather conditions such as heavy periods of rainfall
Assessments of Sports Grounds
Assessments of all sports grounds take place weekly. Items assessed and monitored include and is not limited to:
- Turf coverage
- Presence of weeds
- Signs of wear and turf loss
- Drainage issues
- Holes and ruts
- Evenness of the surface
- Safety concerns
Sports grounds are given a rating after each assessment – Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor or Very Poor.
When we restrict access
Restrictions will be placed on sports grounds that decline to a ‘poor’ rating.
Priority of use will be provided to matches, with training to be restricted or not permitted along with casual bookings and school use.
Council will restrict use of sports grounds in instances of inclement weather where it is anticipated that use will significantly deteriorate the surface.
When we close Sports Grounds
Closures of sports grounds will occur across key renovation periods, notably at the end of each Winter (April to September) and Summer (October to March) seasons.
Closures of sports grounds will also occur when conditions are rated as ‘very poor’.
This decision is made with player safety in mind and to avoid significant damage to the surface that could impact on ongoing community use in the coming weeks and months.
We will close sports grounds in instances of inclement weather where it is anticipated that use will significantly deteriorate the surface.
Current Sports Grounds Status
Open: Full Access for sports training, matches, casual bookings and community use.
Restricted Use: Priority use only. Matches take precedence over training. No casual bookings.
Closed: Closed for all users.
