Mayor Cr Cuc Lam today made the following statement:

The City of Maribyrnong welcomes the State Government’s commitment to the Melbourne Airport Rail Link.

Maribyrnong City Council has been advocating strongly for the airport rail link, and is pleased to have a financial commitment announced by the State Government which brings the rail link closer to being realised.

This is a great outcome for the West, and recognises the significant growth forecast for this area.

Melbourne’s West, the fastest growing area in Australia, is expected to accommodate more than 40 per cent of metropolitan Melbourne's population growth over the next 40 years.

Whilst Maribyrnong City Council’s preferred route would include transport links to northern Maribyrnong including Highpoint Activity Centre and the Defence Site Maribyrnong, Council will work with the State Government on their preferred Sunshine route.

These links are vital and we urge the State Government to make transport connections in the West a high priority.
