Community Engagement Policy 2026-29 endorsed by Council
Published on 17 June 2026
Community engagement is an important part of the decision-making process at Maribyrnong City Council.
It is the way in which community members can let Council know their thoughts on active, upcoming or ongoing projects, works or initiatives, and ensure their voice is heard.
Council’s Community Engagement Policy 2026-29 was endorsed at the June 2026 Council meeting, and sets out clear definitions and roles of Council and community, when it comes to community engagement.
The updated Policy strengthens and elevates Council’s commitment to community engagement. It incorporates community, stakeholder and staff feedback from two engagement phases in late 2025 and early 2026.
In developing the new Policy, extensive consultation was undertaken to best understand what our community needs from us to feel heard and connected. We had 658 responses across both phases of engagement, along with 426 in-person interactions.
“You feedback showcases what is so great about community engagement as a whole. You told us you wanted clearer definitions about what community engagement is, and we’ve updated that,” Mayor, Cr Mohamed Semra said.
“The community also wanted us to better consider marginalised groups and to better explain how our engagement commitments will be applied in practice. And we have updated our commitments to better reflect that feedback.”
Overall, respondents supported the intent of the draft Policy, and Council has also made further updates, based on feedback from the community.
The Policy will be reviewed in four years to ensure it remains current and responsive to community needs. There will also be 12-month progress updates throughout the lifecycle of the Policy.
