Council is trialling new measures to support a safer and more welcoming Footscray CBD.

In response to growing concerns about public safety and wellbeing, Council has been working closely with Victoria Police and local service providers over the past 12 months with the aim to reduce anti-social behaviour and improve safety in the area.

Local Laws officers have undertaken more than 100 walking patrols through Footscray’s central precinct, offering connection and support to individuals in need, and linking them with vital social services. These patrols are part of a broader, compassionate approach to supporting the diverse needs of our community, supported by other Council teams.

As part of a recent initiative led by local businesses, a one-month trial of private security patrols was conducted in April and May 2025. Following the trial, over 20 businesses submitted letters of support recommending that Council continue with this additional presence in the area.

At last night’s meeting, Council voted to engage a private security firm for a six-month period. This would involve two security guards walking Footscray’s CBD with Council’s Local Laws officers for 24 hours per week, helping to ensure a visible presence and assist with de-escalating issues when they arise.

As part of the motion carried, Council will undertake a Request for Quote (RFQ) process to identify a security service provider with a proven, community-led, human-centred and culturally appropriate approach. Council will also engage closely with the Footscray community, including trader groups, local traders, community legal services and community organisations, to ensure the program reflects local needs and values.

Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari said the temporary security support complements other long-term initiatives aimed at revitalising the precinct.

“This is just one part of a broader, ongoing effort to improve the experience of those who live, work, visit and do business in Footscray. We’re facilitating community partnerships, delivering local activations, and continuing our work to support a thriving and inclusive town centre,” Mayor Tiwari said.

Additionally, Council will continue to work closely with the State Government to ensure the timely delivery of a new social support service in central Footscray, and a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Local to serve the needs of our growing community.

“Council remains committed to ensuring Footscray continues to be a vibrant, safe and supportive place for everyone,” Mayor Tiwari continued.
