City of Maribyrnong Councillors voted to protect jobs in the Gordon and Mephan Street precinct, located between Footscray and Maribyrnong, by including it as a Core Employment Area in the Maribyrnong Planning Scheme at the Ordinary Council Meeting Tuesday 24 July.

Mayor Cr Cuc Lam said there had been robust community consultation on the inclusion of the Gordon and Mephan Precinct Planning Report (Amendment C143) to the Maribyrnong Planning Scheme.

“We’ve responded to residents’ call for improved amenity in the precinct. Adoption of the amendment introduces policy on urban design and amenity requiring proper setbacks, discourages vehicle access from the site to local roads, protects trees and provides pedestrian and bike connections,” Cr Lam said.

“Council will continue to work with residents neighbouring the precinct to ensure the issues they’ve raised relating to amenity and traffic are addressed such as adherence to the all-day 40km/hr speed limit for all vehicles in that area.

“By adopting the amendment and submitting it for the Minister for Planning’s approval we are keeping jobs in the municipality. The number of jobs in the precinct has grown from 198 to 206 from 2011 to 2016.

“Recent local studies show the employment trend is gradually transitioning away from traditional jobs to more service and professionally-orientated jobs.

“Adoption of this amendment is part of our vision for the future to provide a mix of job opportunities within our city for our community.”
