Council welcomes Mental Health and Wellbeing support in Maribyrnong
Published on 10 July 2025
The City of Maribyrnong will soon be home to a Mental Health and Wellbeing Local, as announced by the State Government today, providing much needed mental health support to our community.
Set to open in late 2025, the new Local will enable community members to access free mental health support close to home, without the need for a GP referral or Medicare card.
City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari, welcomed the announcement for the Mental Health and Wellbeing Local and noted that mental health support services has been a high priority for Council.
“I am pleased to see State Government investment in mental health support in our City – this will remove barriers for our vulnerable community members, and will meet them where they are to ensure they receive the support they need,” said Mayor Tiwari.
“We have recently witnessed several tragic events in Footscray, and mental health support has been a key advocacy priority for Council to ensure the diverse needs of our community are met,” he continued.
Acting as a 'front door' to the mental health system, the centres offer support and treatment for community members experiencing mental illness or psychological distress, including co-occurring substance use or addiction.
Support is delivered in-person, via telehealth and via outreach services with a care plan designed to reflect a person’s goals and preferences – family, carers and supporters can also be involved.
