Council now inviting feedback on draft Local Law
Published on 23 July 2025
City of Maribyrnong residents have provided valuable insights to help shape Council’s draft ten-year Local Law and following some updates, we are now checking in to see if we have captured your thinking correctly.
Local laws shape our everyday lives, and are there to protect your health, safety and comfort – and a review of our General Purposes Local Law 2015 (Local Law) is being undertaken to ensure it reflects current community needs and legislative requirements.
In March, we asked the community for their feedback on potential changes or opportunities to improve the Local Laws.
“Different proposed laws received varied levels of support, and others called for additional thinking. Given the feedback, as well as internal reviews and modern thinking, we have made changes to the draft Local Law to better reflect our community’s expectations,” Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari said.
There were a number of local laws that were proposed during the first conversation, and based on feedback from the community, Council has decided not to update or introduce these items. In line with community input, we will:
- retain the current number of permitted animals on properties
- not require permits for commercial dog walkers
Council has also decided to make changes and updates to proposed changes based on community feedback, including:
- removing the permit requirement for nature strip planting
- strengthening the rules regarding unsightly and dangerous land, and the requirement for owners and occupiers to keep them safe and tidy
- adding a clause that owners and occupiers must keep buildings in a good condition to prevent them from becoming run-down
- introducing clauses that allow Council to declare some areas as smoke-free
- strengthening rules around regulating abandoned and unregistered vehicles.
“Local laws affect all of us, so Council is now calling on the community to provide feedback on the draft Local Law and its changes. You can get involved at one of our in-person events, or by participating online,” Cr Tiwari said.
