Locals score free open air movie nights

Grab your picnic blankets and pack your popcorn – Maribyrnong’s open air cinemas are here!
Council is hosting two free family movie nights over the Labour Day long weekend using the scoreboards at both the newly redeveloped Skinner Reserve and Yarraville Oval to screen movies for the first time.
The LED scoreboards have been installed at a number of facilities to support the many local sports activities across Maribyrnong, including at Henry Turner North Reserve, Shorten Reserve, Hansen Reserve, Skinner Reserve, and Yarraville Oval.
Council is trialling an alternate use as an open air cinema in celebration of Parks Week.
On Friday 10 March, in partnership with Yarraville Cricket Club, Council presents ‘Over the Hedge’ at Yarraville Oval. The following day, Saturday 11 March, with support from Dinjerra Primary School, Council presents ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ at Skinner Reserve. The school will be providing food and drinks as part of a local fundraiser.
Families are encouraged to bring their own blankets, low chairs, and a picnic, or purchase snacks and refreshments on the night. Alcohol is not permitted.
Gates open at 7pm, with the screening commencing at 8pm. Get in early to secure your spot.
Deputy Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam, first raised the opportunity to use the scoreboards to also host free movie nights in a Notice of Motion to Council in 2022, as a way to encourage community connection and promote other ways the community could enjoy local open spaces.
“I am delighted to see my idea come to fruition with the delivery of our first outdoor cinemas utilising the multi-purpose LED scoreboards – it is such a great way to bring the community together,” said Deputy Mayor, Councillor Cuc Lam.

Message from the Mayor, Councillor Sarah Carter
It’s wonderful to see these state-of-the-art LED screens doubling as movie screens providing additional benefits for our community. Our parks and open spaces play a vital role in bringing the community together and I look forward to seeing families enjoy these free events and exploring further movie night opportunities in the future.
