Council has endorsed the development of a new Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), marking the next phase of Council’s long-standing commitment to reconciliation, cultural recognition and stronger partnerships with First Nations communities.

The decision follows research and consultation with Traditional Owners, Aboriginal community-controlled organisations and First Nations stakeholders.

City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Mohamed Semra said the renewed RAP would help guide Council’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, accountability and meaningful reconciliation.

“Reconciliation is about building genuine relationships, listening to First Nations voices and creating a community where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples feel recognised, respected and included,” Cr Semra said.

“We acknowledge the deep cultural and historical significance of this place for the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong peoples, and we are committed to continuing this work in partnership with Traditional Owners and First Nations communities.”

The City of Maribyrnong is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong peoples, with the Maribyrnong River corridor holding ongoing cultural significance as a place of gathering, connection and care for Country.

Consultation findings identified broad support for Council to continue its reconciliation journey through a renewed Reconciliation Action Plan under the Reconciliation Australia framework.

Development of the new Reconciliation Action Plan will include further engagement and co-design with Traditional Owners, First Nations communities and stakeholders.
