The proposed McIvor Reserve Indoor Sports Stadium has moved a step closer, with Maribyrnong City Council releasing schematic designs and inviting community comments.

The designs show how a two-storey, six-court facility could be delivered at McIvor Reserve in Yarraville, building on the Master Plan endorsed by Council in March 2023. With Maribyrnong’s population forecast to reach 155,000 by 2051, the project would help respond to growing demand for indoor court space in Melbourne’s west, while creating more opportunities for local sport, recreation and community events.

Mayor, Cr Mohamed Semra, said the proposed stadium would be an important investment in the city’s future, strengthening McIvor Reserve as an established sports and active recreation precinct. Integrated within the existing reserve, it would add indoor courts while building on McIvor Reserve’s existing role as a place for local sport and community connection.

“Indoor courts are already in high demand across Melbourne’s west, and that demand will only continue to grow as our city grows,” Mayor, Cr Semra said.

“This is about much more than a stadium. It is about investing in a place where local clubs, families and residents can come together, build connections and strengthen community life.”

“Facilities like this create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to be active, involved and connected, and that is why this project is such an important investment in our growing community.”

The proposed design is for a two-storey, six-court facility with a footprint slightly below that identified in the Master Plan. It includes flexible ground level court configurations to support multiple sports and activities at the same time, dedicated community spaces on the second floor, and acoustic treatments to help minimise impacts on nearby residents. The design also retains around 20 more trees than the original Master Plan concept proposed, with at least two replacement trees to be planted for every tree removed.

The project is recognised as one of Basketball Victoria’s top six priority stadium projects in Victoria and is also included in Netball Victoria’s infrastructure advocacy priorities, reflecting its significance for the region.

The stadium is expected to cost around $60 million. Progression to detailed design and construction would be subject to funding support from the State and Federal Governments. Council has already committed $2.5 million for detailed design subject to a matched commitment from the State Government.

The schematic designs are not final. Community members can review the plans and provide comments before Sunday 2 August 2026 at yourcityyourvoice.com.au/mcivor-stadium
