Community tree planting

In partnership with the State Government, Council will be planting an additional 10,000 trees across the municipality – on top of plantings already planned as part of our annual tree planting program for 2023.

Maribyrnong is one of six local government areas to share $2 million in the latest allocation of funding from the Department of Energy, Environment, and Climate Action’s More Trees for a Cooler, Greener West Program.

Maribyrnong will receive a further $180,000 to invest in both advanced and tube stock trees – plants grown in nursery containers of around 40-70mm in height to encourage root system growth prior to planting in a permanent location.

This latest funding will support the purchase and planting of 150 advanced trees and 10,000 units of tube stock and is on top of funding previously received from the Program that has delivered more than 8,800 trees since 2020, supporting urban cooling and greening across the municipality.

The bigger trees will be planted on the nature strips of industrial areas in Tottenham, West Footscray and Braybrook and tube stock on biodiversity corridors along the Maribyrnong River and Stony Creek. All of the trees will be planted during the 2023 planting season which runs until October, the cooler months provide optimal growing conditions as it’s easier to maintain soil moisture while the trees establish in their new home.

Trees are a valuable community asset that improve the look and feel of our streets and increase canopy cover now and for future generations. More trees provide many benefits to the Maribyrnong community by reducing urban temperatures in the summer months through shade, reducing storm water run-off, providing habitat for native wildlife, and capturing airborne pollutants.

Message from the Mayor, Councillor Sarah Carter

Our tree planting season for 2023 is off to an excellent start, and with the addition of the funding from the More Trees for a Cooler, Greener West Program we are able to further enhance our beautiful city and contribute to urban cooling. This funding brings us another step closer to reaching our aim of increasing our canopy cover by 20 per cent by 2040 as outlined in our Urban Forest Strategy 2018.
