Restoration works complete for prized Pipemakers Park Footbridge

Published on 07 September 2018

Sporting a fresh paint job, among other routine repairs and maintenance, Maribyrnong’s much loved Pipemakers Park Footbridge has been restored to its former glory.

The project, undertaken by Maribyrnong City Council in partnership with Moonee Valley City Council, also included timber repairs, high pressure washing and sanding of the bridge. Much to the delight of locals who regularly use the bridge to cross Maribyrnong River, it remained open throughout the works.

Erected in 1995 and spanning 68 meters, the unique landmark is believed to be the longest single span, two-pinned restrained arch, glue-laminated jarrah pedestrian bridge in the world. Earning it a Design Excellence Award from the Association of Consulting Structural Engineers Victoria in 1998.

A word from the Mayor of Maribyrnong City Council Cr Cuc Lam:

“The iconic bridge is an important landmark for locals in both municipalities, and it is great to see it restored to its former glory.

“It is great to see Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley Councils working collaboratively to benefit the community.”

A word from the Mayor of Moonee Valley City Council Cr John Sipek:

“The footbridge is a special part of Pipemakers Park and its surrounds and provides an important link between the two municipalities over the Maribyrnong River.

“It was great to work together with Maribyrnong City Council to ensure the footbridge looks its best and is in top condition for the locals and visitors who use it every day.”
