Young eco-warriors take Maribyrnong by storm

Council’s transformation of students into eco-warriors with the roll out of the free Environmental Program for Schools is being stepped up with the addition of two new workshop topics.

The waste and environmental education workshops available to local schools and child care facilities is provided by the award winning Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies (CERES) who have been contracted to provide the program.

The program aims to teach students how waste and recycling impact the environment, and introduces simple actions that they can take to reduce waste. The workshops include hands-on activities such as worm farming and composting, student-led waste audits, calculating food miles and the option to go on an excursion to the CERES sustainable urban farm.

Kindergartens and schools within Council that have been involved in the program have said it has made a positive impact on students, teachers and parents alike.

Local teacher at Footscray West Primary School, Daniel Whiting, thanked Council for the free resource, which kept his grade 5 and 6 students engaged and excited to learn more about the environment and sustainability.

“The program has been great, and really provided the children with a great springboard before their latest unit of work,” Mr Whiting said.

Council is committed to increasing recycling awareness and understanding throughout the municipality, which is why it is so important to introduce environmental education as early as possible. It is hoped that the lessons and practices are adopted by students and taken back into the home and wider community – now and in the future.
