Summer Kidz swim program to make a splash at MAC this January

Published on 06 December 2022

With the weather warming up and school holidays approaching, Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre (MAC) is inviting local families to dive into the VICSWIM Summer Kidz program.

This low-cost, five-day intensive program, which will run during the first three weeks of January 2023, gives primary-school-aged children the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of swimming and water safety in a fun and friendly environment.

The government-subsidised program costs $35 per week, supporting families who may otherwise be unable to afford a swimming program over the summer break.

Mayor, Cr Sarah Carter, said the Summer Kidz program helps improve access to swimming lessons for children across the municipality.

“Learning to swim is a vital life skill for all children to master. The Summer Kidz program provides a wonderful opportunity for them to improve their swimming skills and learn about water safety, while minimising the financial strain on parents,” she said.

According to a Royal Life Saving Australia report, in the year up to July 2022, drowning deaths increased 15 per cent on the previous year, and were up 24 per cent compared to the 10-year average.

MAC currently runs over 650 swimming, diving and water safety classes per week for approximately 2,500 students across all age groups, taught by experienced instructors, many of whom are fluent in two or more languages.

Enrolments for the VICSWIM Summer Kidz program are now open.
