The first stage of sediment excavation work within Stony Creek between the fire site and Paramount Road has been completed. EPA and Melbourne Water will be assessing the validation data to help determine the next phase of excavation work.

The desilting works have also allowed detailed sampling across the site which will help to inform planning for the final stage of remediation. A risk assessment will then be conducted to determine the final stages of clean-up required for Stony Creek between the fire site and Paramount Road.

Further works will be planned in close collaboration with Melbourne Water and EPA, and guided by advice from contaminated land specialists after sampling results are finalised.

Stockpiles of contaminated sediment at the fire site continue to be processed, treated and transported off site for disposal to a secure landfill site nominated by EPA. It will take approximately two more weeks to get through the remaining stockpiles of sediment.

Melbourne Water and EPA staff attended the Stony Creek Stakeholder Advisory Group meeting on Thursday 1 August.

The draft rehabilitation plan is now closed for public comment. Your feedback will be used to prepare the final plan to ensure it aligns with community expectations, values and aspirations. The final Stony Creek Rehabilitation Plan is expected to be published in early September 2019, ready for implementation. Make sure to follow Melbourne Water’s Stony Creek Rehabilitation Your Say page to be kept up to date on the release of the final plan and other news.

EPA’s ongoing advice is:

  • Don’t walk along the edge of Stony Creek
  • Don't let pets swim in the area or drink the water
  • As a precaution avoid eating fish from Stony Creek
