Recovery update
Published on 11 January 2019
Maribyrnong City Council, Melbourne Water and EPA continue to work together on the recovery of Stony Creek and the the removal of upstream sources of contamination between the fire site and Paramount Road. The community is advised to avoid coming into contact with water from Stony Creek, and to seek medical help if you feel unwell.
Booms and hay bale bunds continue to trap floating contaminants throughout Stony Creek, and these are inspected twice a week and cleaned or replaced when necessary.
To date, Melbourne Water has removed, stockpiled and contained 170m3 of contaminated sediment ready for safe disposal in secure landfill. By March 2019, they will have removed and stockpiled another 500m3 or more of contaminated sediment.
Further testing and assessment will be undertaken by EPA to ensure the Creek has been remediated to appropriate levels.
Results from samples collected by the EPA on 12 December have just been received and will be assessed over the next few days. EPA expect these results will be available in the week of 14 January, and the next round of water and sediment sampling is scheduled for 17 January.
EPA officers continue to carry out regular inspections of the fire site to monitor compliance with statutory notices and ensure appropriate risk controls are in place.
From 14 January 2019, the M102 Water Main Renewal Project will continue from Charlotte Street West through Cruickshank Park. An update about this project is available on Melbourne Water’s website.
