Recovery update

Construction of the Stony Creek Pedestrian Footbridge in West Footscray is complete with the new bridge now open to the public. Council has overseen the design and construction of the project, with works taking just 11 weeks to complete, beginning in early February and concluding in early May.

The new bridge and connecting ramps and paths will improve community safety and accessibility along this section of Stony Creek. The bridge will ensure safe linkages between trails and neighbourhoods on the north and south side of the bridge, and between Cala Street and Beaumont Parade.  

The bridge and connecting paths have been designed and constructed to meet Melbourne Water guidelines, and the new pedestrian footbridge is elevated above the 1 in 10 year flood level to help prevent blockages during flood events. To further enhance the aesthetics of the landscape and ensure environments for native wildlife, native shrub planting has been included around the bridge.  

Stony Creek is a vital waterway in our City that flows from the west through Braybrook, Tottenham, West Footscray and Yarraville to reach the Yarra River near the West Gate Bridge. This development is part the Stony Creek Future Directions Plan, which was endorsed by Council on 25 February 2020, and recommends new improvements in the area to help increase community safety and accessibility.
