Floodworks by Anna Kiparis

Visit Maribyrnong Library this October to view an exhibition of photographic artworks by Anna Kiparis. This exhibition is part of a series of arts projects supported by Maribyrnong City Council to acknowledge the impacts of the 2022 Maribyrnong River Flood and highlight community strength and resilience.

The photographs in Floodworks are created with analogue film that reflects the friability and sometimes impermanence of a landscape. Using film’s tactile nature, Kiparis sought to echo the emotional residue of natural disaster and the lingering traces of its disruption. By interfering with the photographic film process, moments of stillness become scarred by flooded landscapes.

Working slowly and intentionally, Kiparis’ process became an act of contemplation and respect for a community in recovery. This body of work reflects on resilience, and the evolving relationship between people and place, in the aftermath of forces beyond their control.

About the artist

Anna Kiparis is a photo-media artist whose work spans analogue and digital forms, often exploring suburban landscapes and their emotional undertones. She holds a Master’s degree in Photography from RMIT University and her work has been shortlisted for several major art prizes, including the National Photographic Portrait Prize, Footscray Art Prize, Darebin Art Prize and Wyndham Art Prize. Her work is held in the permanent art collections of Merri-bek and Maribyrnong City Councils.
