2024 National Tree Day to boost local communities and preserve habitat
Published on 19 July 2024
Planet Ark’s National Tree Day takes place on 28 July 2024, and Council is getting behind it by holding a planting event at Burndap Park.
This year, we’re determined to match the record-setting efforts of 2023, where 4,000 trees and shrubs were planted, continuing our commitment to enhancing local communities and preserving native habitat for our vast native wildlife species.
Council’s National Tree Day event will run from 9am to 3pm on Sunday 28 July 2024, with participants asked to meet at Jack’s Magazine carpark located at 17B Magazine Way, Maribyrnong, where a marquee will be set up for sign in. The event will commence with a Welcome to Country by First Nations Elders to honour the rich Indigenous heritage of the Maribyrnong area.
Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a wildlife show hosted by Wild Action to learn about the diverse range of animals that call Maribyrnong home. The Footscray Lions Club will provide a BBQ lunch, and a coffee cart will be available, offering participants free coffee to keep them energised throughout the day. Additionally, there will be free face painting available for the little wildlife warriors in attendance.
City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam said National Tree Day is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, contribute to environmental conservation, and foster a deeper connection with nature.
“We are proud to be a part of this initiative for the tenth consecutive year. The event showcases our community’s environmental efforts, and is crucial in supporting our goal of reaching a canopy cover of 20 percent by 2040, in line with our Urban Forest Strategy” Mayor Lam said.
The planting stock for the 2024 event has been generously funded by Melbourne Water Community Grants, specifically the River Health Incentives Program, in partnership with the Friends of Maribyrnong Valley and Working Heritage for Jacks Magazine. This initiative has also been supported by the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments.
