Active Maribyrnong Grants now open for summer!
Published on 07 September 2018
Maribyrnong’s youngest residents are encouraged to apply for Council’s Active Maribyrnong Grants which aim to help 5 to 18 year olds get active and meet new people by joining a local sporting or recreation club.
The grants provide an important opportunity for a range of underrepresented young people in Maribyrnong to actively participate in community sport and recreation. Eligible participants can apply for up to $150 financial assistance to contribute towards sport club fees.
Last year more than 150 young people successfully applied for the grant and participated in seven different sports across 15 clubs across Maribyrnong.
Local parent, Abuk Akol, thanked Council for the grant, which allowed all of her six children to play basketball without having to worry about the costs.
“Due to financial burdens placed on my family, I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford registration fees for all of my children,” said Ms Akol. “But now all of my children are playing basketball freely and we have enough money to get snacks during and after they play.”
Ms Akol said another benefit of the grant has been the change she has seen in her daughter, Athok, who was very shy and introverted and has now made many new friendships.
“One thing that really pleased me is that Athok is now able to communicate with other people and step out of her comfort zone,” said Ms Akol.
With over 50 participating sporting and recreation clubs, there is something for every child – ranging from football and soccer to archery and boating.
Grant applications for summer are now open, until Sunday 7 October. To apply visit: www.activemaribyrnong.com.au
Council will be hosting an information evening for clubs on Wednesday 29 August. For more details please contact: Rick Morris, Recreation Participation Officer, 03 9688 0330
A word from the Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam:
“The Active Maribyrnong Grants program is an important fixture in our community as it allows our young people to get involved, get active and get social without the financial burden for families.
“Council is proud to provide this program and hope it reduces some of the barriers for young people to join local sporting and recreation clubs.”
