Council has endorsed the name for the Civic Precinct and Community Hub park, following a community consultation process on the proposed naming.

The park’s name was endorsed as ‘balit bargoongagat banhul’. Balit bargoongagat translates to ‘strong people linked together (community)’ and banhul translates to ‘park’ in the Woi-wurrung language.

City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari, said the name acknowledges our First Nations community while expressing a collective vision of unity and strength for the future.

“We have been working in partnership with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrong Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation to ensure cultural links were considered in the design and construction process for the park, including indigenous cultural and historical values,” he said.

“Our community is stronger together and the naming of this park further symbolises this togetherness,” Mayor Tiwari continued.

During May and June, we received 20 community responses, with 50 per cent in favour of the proposed name. Submissions in favour of the name thanked Council for seeking advice from local Aboriginal and First Nations Peoples, supported the use of the Woi-wurrung language, and suggested a syllable break down along with an English translation on park signage.

Council will now submit the endorsed name to Geographic Names Victoria for registration and contact each of the respondents to inform them about Council’s decision.
