A major milestone has been reached in the delivery of a new Civic Precinct and Community Hub in Maribyrnong.

The ground floor slabs are now being poured prior to the installation of the precast and timber structure for the new civic administration building on the site at the corner of Hyde and Napier streets in Footscray.

The pour follows four months of demolition works which have seen nearly 2,200 tonnes of asphalt, concrete, bricks and steel removed from the site with all but 83 tonnes able to be recycled.

Diverting this volume of materials from landfill supports Council’s commitment to environmentally sustainable building practices during the development of a new, modern, six-star Green-Star building.

Restoration works on the interior of the iconic 80 year old historic Footscray Town Hall also underway.

Recognising heritage constraints, these works are designed to unlock and celebrate the full potential of this iconic building, returning it to public life and restoring the connection between the community and the civic centre of the municipality. This will include a new flexible community foyer and forum space providing a direct access to community spaces and interface between the Town Hall, new civic building, and new community park.

The multi-million dollar redevelopment, which is being delivered by Melbourne-based commercial construction company, Ireland Brown Constructions Pty Ltd, is due for completion by the end of 2024.

The build is part funded by a $10 million dollar loan from the State Government’s Community Infrastructure Loans Scheme, which provides access to low-interest subsidised loans.

During the redevelopment staff are working from temporary premises at the Central West Shopping Centre, with a new Customer Service Centre also established at the Footscray Library, 56 Paisley Street, which is staffed 8:30am to 5:00pm daily.

Council meetings are hosted at the Braybrook Community Hub.
